I had a big post all typed out listing the pros and cons, in my opinion, of Annie Sloan’s chalk paint, but then I realized I might be acting too quickly to lay it all out on the line when in fact I have only used two of the products one time.  So in fairness, I have decided to save the entire list for another time and share with everyone my first reaction.

The PROs:

The WAX.   I must admit that I am in love the AS clear wax.  It was easy to apply and easy to rub off, but the real WOW factor was in the finish, smooth and creamy like butter.  This step alone will make you look as if you were a professional at restoring furniture!

The COLORS:   While there isn’t a large selection of colors to choose from, the ones that are available couldn’t be more lovely.   In fact,  I have an idea for selecting the perfect color for a piece of furniture prior to ever picking up a paint brush.  I will be sharing my idea soon.

The CONS:

No PRIMING?  I’m not so sure on that!  I was very disappointed when it took 3 coats of paint to cover over my chest of drawers and I can still see spots (not sure if they are water spots or what??) peaking through my paint.  Ugh!

Chalk-Paint-needs-primer

{I tried to trace just outside the discoloration}

The spots are not super noticeable via this photograph but it’s there and I notice it!  Also it angers me that I went against my better judgment and didn’t prime first.

The BRUSH STOKES.    This could be partly my fault.  A number of facts could have played a part in why I had brush stokes,  using a brush instead of spraying the paint on, weather was too warm and humid, the paint appeared too thick but I did not want to alter it for my first use, and I could have applied the second coat before the first coat dried.

I found that if I used a fine sanding sponge between coats I could levitate the noticeable brush strokes, but doing so left me with a chalk dust everywhere!

So there you go, my opinion, for what it’s worth?!?!?  I have another color that I purchased at the same time as the Old White and hope to find the perfect piece to try AS Chalk Paint one more time before I decide yay or nay.

The garden has a fresh new look , causing a smile with every visit. After the painting of the picket fence exterior, I added a Gothic finial to each post on the sides of the gate. With the help of my little man, I put in 2 permanent herb beds, flanking the front gate.On one side we put 2 lavender and 3 thyme. On the other, we put in all Lavender. I found the Lavender on sale for half the price being it is the end of season for such things to be in any demand.
A sand walkway bordered by brick with large River stone nestled in, have been placed for the Garden entry. I may very well come Spring, continue the path all the way through the the garden, guiding to the back gate on the North & South side.On the back end, I am contemplating a T formation for back lay out.
We put in a Fall crop of Kale, Winter density lettuce, peas & snow peas in the front Carrot bed, which are coming up rather nicely. I anticipate  the late harvest with hopefully a decent amount for freezing.
All in all, I am overjoyed with what we have done to make the garden more inviting as you walk out back. Very little cost, but a huge impact of difference. I still have the back arbor area to do, which will be a few more weeks being I am buying materials on my small paycheck.

I am rather excited to have found a U.S source for a certain willow woven Potato basket bin I have coveted for some time now. I have seen them all over sites for purchasing from the U.K
I find them absolutely darling and would be of great use since my hanging basket has fallen twice now due to the weight of our potato consumption. These would also make for great onion or Garlic bin which the source does have a smaller version. I found them online at Bed Bath & Beyond for a range of $30 & $60. I do believe this will be my answer when asked what I would like for the holidays. One for onions & one for potatoes. Although, I may end up purchasing from a place in the U.K if I do not find these in my local store.

I also found an inexpensive source for the {great for beginners} Easy to make Shaker style Onion baskets, which unlike the bins above, these would be hung. How beautiful to have a cellar/Pantry or basement wall lined with these for storing all those Garden onions, garlic bulbs and yes...even those petite fingerling /colored potatoes {after all, ya cant store them all in the willow bin}.
I found the kits complete with instructions for $8.95 over at http://www.basketweaving.com/ . They are named Country onion basket on their site.I am determined to order the kit with the extra materials supply for 5. Being the weather is getting colder and knowing our children, they would highly enjoy making these as we sit by the fireplace, cooking up some soup or such with the dutch oven in the hot embers.
I do believe they would make for unique gifts and would be enhanced by adding a slate, galvanized metal or other writing surface tag attached to it's front. I found these over on Etsy By SweetKate {at this posting} for $5.95 that gives you 2 of them. This is just one of the many styles to choose from.
I have more work to be done before the cold hits this week. Rosemary to be potted up from the front herb and flower bed.  Some problem solving of the once again muddy chicken pen {I think sand may be the key for those certain spots they seem to slop up quickly} and of course some intense Mud room cleaning before it's too cold to have my hands in a mop bucket scrubbing floors and walls.
Until next time..
Sweetest Dreams,
~Tammie

I went out to lunch with my family this past Monday (they are out of school this week...yay!)  We went to Cafe Rio  (my fav. food is mexican).  Afterwards, my mom was trying to find a Halloween shirt for my little bro and they only had really weird ones at Walmart.  I told her I could make one and had this one done in an hour.  He loves it.  Isn't he so cute too?

The eyes are attached with velcro, so you can take them off to wash the shirt.

I am linking up here and here.

Nate brought it to my attention that I should put Marlo's baby announcement on our DIY blog. It made sense...we did "DIY" them (with a lot of help from Abby at Monogram Wedding).  Well before we had baby girl (back when she was just an idea), Nate made the comment to me that he thought a CD baby announcement would be neat. I was not totally convinced. Once we found out we were pregnant, he got right to work on a playlist for a "boy" and one for a "girl". He had the playlists ready and waiting. Once M was born, he played me the Jack Johnson song "My Little Girl". It brought tears to my eyes. I loved everything about it! With that song, he had me convinced that a CD announcement might actually be a neat idea.  I drew up an outline of what we were looking for and sent it off to Abby. Abby put our ideas to work and the CD baby announcement was born!

Marlo's Baby Announcement

We used a photo of M holding onto the necklace that Nate bought me after she was born of her first initial.

The inside flap listed her "baby stats".

The pocket held the CD along with a newborn photo taken of her.

On the back of the photo, we added our favorite line from Jack Johnson's "My Little Girl".

On the back of the envelope, we included M's return address and "M" monogram.

We tied the announcement together with dark brown string and placed them into envelopes to be mailed. The key to mailing CD's is to make sure they hand meter them otherwise the CD can get ruined.

Save the best (and back) for last...

My favorite part was the back of the announcement. We had a photo taken of all 3 of our feet and turned it into a label that we placed on the back of the announcement. Abby had to use photoshop to get the dog hair on my toes (the pugs were determined to appear the announcement somehow).  All photos used in the announcement were taken by Alisa Hayes Photography

Well it's time for some more fall inspiration!
As you remember I had my front porch fall decor put out so early this year. I was probably rushing it a little but I just couldn't wait any longer to get it all out! This is one of my favorite times of the year.

Starting today these ladies will be hosting a fall decor series of great ideas and inspiration for this season.
It's fun to see all these creative ideas, I've linked up to join in this year.

Our Fall Mantel {at the store}
I started with an antique gold mirror as the centerpiece and then stacked vintage trunks in the mantels opening. I added pumpkins, old books, wooden candle sticks, a concrete urn full of gourds, a orange vase with curly willow branches- from my grandmother's yard, a wooden acorn, and salvaged architectural pieces that I already had.

These black and white pumpkins are from Hobby Lobby.

I then added a few collected pieces: an antique wooden spool, metal basket, wooden letter, and a small crock with festive accessories.

The mantel was originally from an old New Orleans house that was salvaged.  I just love the details and chippy paint.

I couldn't resist the little pumpkins at Savemart today. I had a moment of weakness and bought some. :) I already had the mini straw bale from Wal-Mart, and the crate is one of the ones in my wedding arsenal. I used double-sided tape to wrap the pumpkins with different laces and ribbons.

I made the fall runner last year. ;) One of the pumpkins is elevated by a slice of wood that my hubby cut with a chainsaw.

Super cute! I love the way it turned out! I did it without the straw bale (because I forgot about it) and it didn't look nearly as cute!

I just realized tonight that I hadn't posted my fall shelf on my blog! I started off with my DIY Rustic Shelf, since I don't have a mantel. I kept the old window frame from my summer decor. I love it too much to ever take it down. (Won't it look great with a holiday wreath hanging from the top of it at Christmas?) I made these bead board candy corns last year and I still love them! I used a scrap block of wood and stained it, then cut words out with my Silhouette and tied it with jute. My hubby cut up a small log for me with the chainsaw. The ceramic pumpkins have a big hole in the base, so I was able to put one on my candlestick. (because of the sharp stick that holds the candle in place). I added my fall branches, and last year's acorn garland, cut a bit shorter.

The garland is actually light and dark wood grain peel and stick flooring strips that are sold individually at home improvement stores. They cut great with scissors! They are held up on the garland by using a hole punch.

I'm loving my fall shelf! ;)

Do you have that sometimes, that all of a sudden you're drawn to a certain colour, one that you never really gave much attention to before? Well, lately I am loving plum. The slightly dusty, deep purple that can turn living rooms into lush luxurious lounges, bedrooms into boudoirs and outfits into sophistication. Combine it with duck egg blue and it lightens up. Combine it with dark greys, blues and black and it becomes seductive and mysterious. Team it with yellow and it becomes autumnal and slightly vintage. Plum...yum!

I have just finished and put up in the shop a lovely patchwork cushion in plum and yellow, made with Michael Miller retro fabric and an old merino wool jumper. Very upcycled and unique! Ready to be shipped to your sofa or bed ;-)
