A couple of days ago I read in the newspaper that they were looking for volunteers to help set up a couple thousand flags in the cemetery. The old, shy me would have thought about it, but not called the phone number from the article unless someone was going with me. I thought about it for a day and decided, yes you want to do this, no you don't need someone to hold your hand. I am SO glad I went. Volunteers were to meet there at 6 am. That 5 am alarm wasn't so nice, but it was worth it. They tell you what to do and you pick a truck and follow it to it's starting point. The trucks are loaded down with hundreds of flags each, all marked with a name and number. The poles are already on the ground next to their holes. You get into teams of 3 or 4 and just start wiping down poles and hanging up flags. They tell you there is no rush, it is meant to be a somber experience. You are careful to not let the flags ever touch the ground. It is quite humbling to be in the presence of so many men with their uniforms, shirts, and hats that say "POW, Purple Heart, Silver Star, etc.". I had the pleasure of hanging flags with a man named Richard and his wife. He was in Vietnam, and he had lost family members in the Korean and Iraq wars. Seriously, what can you possibly say to these men and women? There are no words that can ever measure up to their sacrifice. Crawling out of bed early on a holiday and walking a couple of miles to hang flags is nothing.

I will be sure to go back next year. Way more meaningful than a BBQ, although we'll be doing that later as well. ;)

I always keep my eyes and ears open on the hunt for great vintage treasures. Last week I decided to randomly type in the words 'bentwood chair' in the search box of our local Gumtree and in the listings I found something that immediately caught my eye. I contacted the owner to arrange a viewing and in his back garden I found five battered, dirty, damaged chairs - but of an unmistakable design and the leftovers of the labels on the bottom made me smile from ear to ear: here I had no less than five original Hans Wegner wishbone chairs. He got them from a house-clearing somewhere, some time. I couldn't believe my eyes - nor the price: £60 for the lot! They do need complete re-lacquering and seat replacement at some point, but for now I am the proud owner of a beautiful set of salvaged Danish designer classics.

Looking good around our beech dining table!
I added cushions...to prevent my cats from getting their claws into those vintage paper cord seats!

Some more wishbone chair love (in much more grand and stylish homes than mine ;-) ...

I woke this morn in hopes to have rid myself of a problem. A problem that would easily be avoided if I had put the chicken wire up along the bottom of the garden fencing a month ago. Alas, I did not due to not having it yet. But now.. now I will not until I have handled a new nemesis in my garden. One that is so bold, so taunting. So...ANNOYINGLY smart....
Well played little rabbit. Well played. You outsmarted me this time. You have dined on my bean tops for 3 mornings in a row. This morning you eluded my well placed trap. Leaving more tufts of your fur clinging to the chewed tips & haphazardly between the rows of young bean plants. It's as though you are taunting my efforts with your every escape.
I hope you enjoyed those slices of apple leading into the trap, where you stopped short by a mere inch of the metal step plate. I now see where my mistake was made and the next morn, there will be more. More to tempt your now accustomed appetite. Sweet juicy green apple slices laid out for your dining with a placement more accurate to your demise.
I have freely allowed your light munching upon the lettuce. I even planted sweet peas along the fence row in hopes to satisfy your stomach with such rare delights in comparison to your wild diet. But Now... now you have attacked my precious Pinto & Borlotti beans. I had but one Borlotti plant to survive the disasters of last year. That one I so carefully saved seed from. Ensuring that this year I would reap a more bountiful harvest of my unbuyable legume. You have betrayed our treaty. Dismissed my consideration and kindness. You have stepped into a battle field. A battle I declare to win.
Game on little cotton tail. Game on...

OH! P.s.  And don't think I have not taken notice how you lounge upon the hillside staring at me. You, all splayed out so casually within a very short distance of me so early in the morn as the sun rises to the sky. I have taken note of your boldness and it will play into my hands very well. Very well indeed.
