I am usually not a "gold" fan, but somehow, I'm dreaming of a gold Christmas this year. A shiny, sparkly, bling bling old fashioned Hollywood glamour Christmas. So while browsing through some of my sweet sponsors' shops, I selected some Christmas gifts that would make my heart skip a beat and my eyes shine!

A: Felted Bead Necklace on Suede - Mustard
B: Triangle Necklace Black and Gold
C: Open Pyramid Earrings
D: Black and Bronze Two-Tone Chain Necklace
E:  Stackable Pyramid Stud Rings
F: Over my Head Leafy Headband

covered button jewelry tutorial

I think a handmade gift is so much more personal and special than something picked up at a store.

Here’s a handmade gift idea that is simple, easy and inexpensive to make, yet shows that you care.

And the best part – anyone can make these.

{Ella, my 6 year old, made some}

I know I have an addiction to pretty fabric. I just can’t get enough of it. When I order it sometimes it sits there for weeks because I can’t bring myself to cut it. And I never want to throw away scraps of beautiful fabric. This project is perfect for those precious fabric scraps. All it takes is a few inches of fabric, a covered button kit, a shank and some E9000,  Mod Podge and Dimensional Magic (optional) plus about 10 minutes of your time!

Here’s a little Covered Button Tutorial – in case you’ve never made these before:

covered button tutorial 1

1. Pick out the covered button size you want to make.

larger circle of fabric

2. Cut a circle about 1 inch larger than the metal button.

the fabric

3. Put the fabric on top of the flexible plastic mold, right side down.

4. Press the top of the button cover onto the fabric and into the flexible plastic mold.

put the back on it

5. the fabric will bunch up at the top once you press down. Fold the excess fabric into the center of the button and press the back of the button onto the button and press down until it snaps in place.

That’s it!

Now, to make it into a pendant – pull off the metal ring with pliers. Then put a dot of E9000 on the back of the button and press a jewelry shank onto it. Let dry.

To  make the personalized pendant, I found some alphabet fabric and then cut out a circle with the desired letter in the middle. I made the covered button and then covered the button with a layer of Mod Podge. Once that was dry, I filled in the letter with a colored Sharpie (permanent marker). Be sure to add the Mod Podge, or the Sharpie will bleed into the fabric. After that is done, I added a layer of Dimensional Magic over the top to seal it. But this is optional.

And I saw a fun idea in Martha Stewart. To package up this project, I made some covered buttons, and then threaded an elastic band through the back. Then you can wrap the rubber band around the gift box with the button on the top. It makes a cute alternative bow, PLUS the gift receiver gets a cute covered button pony tail holder to use too!! So fun!!

And of course, you can make plain Covered Button Necklaces too!

Jen is my bloggy bestie.  We run The CSI Project together, Crafterminds, and we are doing a web show together in the fall.  Yet I have never guest posted on her blog.  I wanted to have the perfect project before I posted here.  Well that day of perfection will never come.

However, I did come to share with you a fun little gift to give yourself or a friend for the summer…an embellished grocery bag container.

These are perfect to throw in a beach bag for wet suits.  They are also wonderful to have in your car for summer road trips.  Whatever you reuse plastic bags for having a container full of them looks a heck of a lot better than stuffed in a drawer.  Plus they are so much more portable this way.

I figured out how to fold them so that they are interconnected and one bag comes out at a time but pulls the next one out a little.

Supplies:

12 plastic grocery bags (I used Target ones)

coordinating fabric

Empty wipe container

Fabric Mod Podge

Foam brush

Spray adhesive

scissors or rotary cutter

quilting ruler

1.  Grab a dozen bags and flatten them out pushing all the air out.

2.  Fold them in half again pressing all the air out.

DSC_1157

3. Overlap the handles onto the top of the previous bag.  Do this for all 11 bags lining them all up into one big row.

DSC_1159

4.  Fold the first bag’s handle upward.  This will be your middle and the first bag you pull out of the container.  All the other bags will be connected to this first one.

DSC_1160

5.  Now tightly roll up your bags tucking in the new handles as you roll.

6.  After you roll up 12 bags you are ready to insert them into your wipes container.

7. Tuck the first bag’s handles through the top.  Now you are done.

Done?  What do you mean done?

I can’t be at TT& J without embellishing right!? RIGHT!

8.  Cut out a piece of fabric roughly 8” x 10”.  With your foam brush “paint” Fabric Mod Podge onto the fabric.  The Mod Podge seals the edges and gives the fabric a durable water resistant surface.

9.  After it is dry cut it to size.  For one of the Lysol wipes containers I cut mine 7 1/8” x 10 3/8”.  Then glue it in place.  I use a spray adhesive because it is quick and easy.  Overlap the pieces one over another. Adorable and practical!

I LOVE IT!
