Hello Readers!

This past weekend, a major trend took place, it rained constantly and unrelentlessly. That being said, I was able to utilize my carport this weekend to get things moving on the pallet entertainment center, and the recycled lumber crib mobile. So lets dive right into the action!

I have always wanted to make one a vertical garden wall! Thanks to this guest post from Bridgman, I might be attempting this project this weekend! Enjoy!

Create your own vertical garden using a wooden shipping pallet.

If you love nothing more than exciting and innovative home projects, then creating a vertical garden is a fun and creative way of maximising growing space in your home. Made popular by Patrick Blanc, the famed French botanist, vertical gardening is increasingly being used on buildings across the world to bring greenery into urban spaces. However, you don’t have to build a vertical garden on a vast scale, and with only a wooden pallet, some plants, planting soil, and a few tools you can create your own unique garden wall at home.

This project is ideal if you’re short of space but still want to grow flowers and foliage. Succulents and herbs work wonderfully in a homemade vertical garden, as do many flowering plants such as petunias and lobelia. After only a few hours work and two weeks to allow the plants to settle, you can brighten up any wall in no time at all.

If you would like to create your own vertical garden at home, simply follow these simple instructions put together by Bridgman.

I don't know what's going on with me lately, but I feel like the grief of losing my dad has finally caught up with me. It's been almost a year and a half since I received that awful phone call. I hesitate to blog about my dad because I don't want to upset my mom. I've thought about many blogs about my dad for months, but put off writing them for one reason or another. Hurt. Ache. Pain. Longing. Sadness. Tears.

For most of this time, I've been putting off accepting that he's really gone. It's not SUPER hard to do when you live 2,000 miles away. I don't know if I've ever told how it happened. It's very surreal. The last time I heard his voice, was in the background of a phone call when my mom called to say they were driving to Illinois to visit her sister. They had just got back from a Florida vacation, so I told her "Ok, but your NEXT trip had BETTER be to California!!"

My dad had to go back to Ohio to get ready for work and my mom stayed the rest of the week because her sister was having her 50th anniversary party that weekend. After a couple of days (unknown to me because we'd said she would just call me when they were back home) of my dad not answering the phone, my mom had to take further action. Long story short, my brother and his wife had to drive over to their house in the middle of the night in a blizzard, have the police break the door, and found him. He was in his favorite recliner, with the phone still on the receiver right next to him. They assured us that even if an EMT had been sitting on the couch when it happened, there would have been nothing they could have done.

I HATE when I get a phone call from a family member late at night or really early in the morning. It makes my heart skip a beat now. My call came late at night, and I can still hear my brother relaying the news. Just six months earlier I had hugged him goodbye in his hospital bed, one day post-colon cancer surgery. I had no idea it would be my last hug ever.

After the initial several months of grief, the physical symptoms of anxiety (couldn't lay on the couch and watch tv alone at night because that's what I was doing when my brother called; limbs going numb; shortness of breath) went away. I think in the time between then and now, I shut it out. I still realized he's fully gone, I was sad, but for some reason...I stopped crying. Like, ever. You know in the movie The Holiday when she hadn't cried for years, even when she tried? Yeah, that was me. Until now.

I've faced a bunch of challenges lately, just various "not-so-easy" things getting the Etsy shop open, pure exhaustion, and a few other things. The other day I typed "Doobie Brothers" into Pandora. My dad LOVED classic rock music. He was in his 20's in the 1970's so he was all into that kind of music. He recorded hours upon hours of music onto his reel-to-reels and that's what I grew up listening to as a child. He had a dog named Zeppelin before I was born. I guess the dog growled at my brother when he was a baby and my dad got rid of him right away.

Now I've moved into this stage of welcoming the sadness. It's a weird place to be, and I certainly don't welcome the fact that he's gone. Not at all. But I feel like I am finally accepting it, slowly. It really DID happen. I REALLY miss him. But the heartbreaking and heartwarming thing is that my new Doobie Brothers Pandora station makes me feel like I am watching him sing (terribly, by the way) at the top of his lungs. I remember those days he would break out his reel to reels fondly, and I feel connected to him. I realized two things through this station: 1. The aliens must have been working overtime in the 70's because there are a TON of album covers with ufo's and aliens on them (there's a REALLY funny story in UFO's and my dad too...for another time!), and 2. I know more lyrics to Eagle's music than any artist in the last ten years. Miss you daddy, meet you in the basement with the loud music. ;)

Using words in home decor has been popular for a while now, with most high street stores selling decor items to go along with this trend.

Personally I find the use of single letters or the words 'Love', 'Home', 'Welcome' and 'Eat' becoming a bit tiresome by now, especially when done in a faux-vintage style, but I do like the use of text in interior design. As usual I have been pinning myself silly on Pinterest lately, so today I will share some text-based styling ideas with you around ways to use words, letters and complete articles in your house without becoming boring.

Here we go!

Write your favourite quotes or inspirational words on found pebble stones and display them around your house or in a bowl.  Love this idea.

Reading newspapers in bed gets a whole different meaning with this wall! Using newspaper as wallpaper creates a great graphic effect:

The use of blackboard paint has also been popular in home decor for a while and a great way to introduce text in your interior. Good thing is, you can alter it if you get bored with the words ;-). Use it on walls or cupboard like done here:

You could be bold and write your house rules on the wall. Bit intimidating perhaps? Or pretty cool?

And why just use paint or chalk? Here's a wall with words made with thumb tacks / push pins. Not sure what it says, but the effect is good.

If you can't decide what words or text to use, just chalk single letters on your wall!

This idea takes a bit of time to gather so many wooden printers block letters, let alone putting them all together on the wall, but the effect is great:

Who says to use words exclusively indoors? Paint words on or create text out of metal and attach to a wall in your garden:

I already mentioned the over-usage of words like 'Home', 'Love' and 'Eat' in homes, so I thought I include this image! You can be as bold as you want and the possibilities with words, text and languages are endless. So why limit yourself...? Have fun!

Hello all!

One of the few art projects that I distinctly remember doing as a kid was placing flowers on white sun paper, letting it sit outdoors for a few minutes and then rinsing the paper off to find the flower outlines transferred onto an indigo blue background. When looking for an online source for sun print paper recently, I was intrigued to find that the technology has now also been applied to fabric. I had to try it. The cushions above that I just brought into the shop are the result. I traced antique penmanship art images onto a sheet of clear celluloid and then sewed the results into cushions with linen backs. I had to experiment a bit with time and placement, but I eventually managed to get the images to transfer clearly on the rich indigo color that I love so much. Here are a few more ideas via Pinterest for sun fabric projects.

So yesterday evening was very productive indeed, although I did not get as far as I wanted, I was able to get  a good leg up. Yesterday was also an incredibly tough trial of temptation.

I once heard that "luck is when preperation and opportunity meet." Where I have been preparing now for over 3 years, RAW is giving me my opportunity.

On September 6th, Reclaimed Wreckage/Lisa Miller will be the featured artist for a runway show at The Depot, put on by RAW, Natural Born Artists!!! They came and found me and needless to say I was stupid excited about this opportunity!

RAW, Natural Born Artists is an artist driven organization designed to put local artists on the map. Now in over 60 cities they've found there way in to my little hometown of Salt Lake, and picked ME to be their main artist. A normal single mother going to school full time while running a business might just throw my accessories on someone elses clothing line... But let's face it, that's just not like me. So, the first Thursday in September, look for my accessories to be draped across my BRAND NEW CLOTHING LINE!!

Now I just gotta learn how to design, draft, and sew clothes ;)

In the meantime, click on RAW to check out this amazing local artist organization.

Last week I hosted a small craft party for my daughters and their friends. I wanted to do something fun for them this summer, because the three of us work our butts off during the school year. I originally was going to have a sewing themed party, but then got REALLY busy once I decided to open an Etsy shop!  I decided to  broaden it into a craft party.
I really love the button candy suckers I made from a mold I ordered online. I also made cutout cookies with a button shaped cookie cutter. I am NOT a talented sewer, BUT I successfully made these zipper pouches. Beverly's had some of my favorite Amy Butler fabric on clearance, so I used that. I did half and half with the alternating the main and lining fabrics. Beverly's also sells mini clear tubes, so I filled those with gumballs. They also got a button sucker tucked into their pouch.
I bought the value packs of canvas from Hobby Lobby when they were on sale, and each girl painted her own monogram and background scene. Then they glued on various flowers. We made ice cream sundaes and they each got two mini cups of toppings to add to their ice cream.

The mini easels and canvas are SO tiny! They were all on sale at JoAnns. I survived and the kids all had fun! ;)

Just in case you're wondering, the Etsy shop is now open! You can see a few of the offerings on the blog sidebar.

I can't believe I reached 150 posts.  This is from my very first one.  It's from a Digi Scrapbook class I took from Jessica Sprague.  While my posts have changed a little since June 4, 2009, along with everything else in my life, I think I love blogging more than ever.

Plus as a bonus, I get to share one of my all time favorite projects, and it only cost me about $5.

My mom teaches school and I was lucky enough to get to borrow her opaque projector.  After this project, I think I need one of my own.  She said their school is giving the teachers new projectors that work with their smart boards, so I'm crossing my fingers I get to keep this one.

These are the images I got from The Graphics Fairy.  Just love her site.  I merged the regular birdcage and the lantern together in Photoshop to get the image I wanted.  Then printed it out and took it to Staples.  They made this transparency for $0.99.

I will be doing the candlestick soon and I will definitely share how.

I just set up the projector, got some paint pens for $2 from Wal-mart and went to town.  It took about 2 pens to do the whole image.  It's in a space that's kind-of dead space behind the door.  Origionally I was going to put a mirror there, but I was afraid it would be broken when someone opened the door.

This is perfect.
I see it every morning when I wake up.
Just gorgeous!

Here are some close-ups of the lantern/birdcage.
I love how it turned out!

Here's a teaser of what we did in the boys room with the projector.  I'm waiting for the vinyl from my sweet sis-in-law and I'll post final pics.  It's amazing how the projector has opened up so many possibilities for projects.  Maybe thats why it's called a PROJECT-OR!
