If you haven't already read about the NEW Hotel in Athens on Yatzer, then here's your update. It is part of the Yes! Hotels chain, owned by the very affluent art patron Dakis Joannou. The chain also includes Semiramis Hotel in Kiffisia, Athens which was designed by Karim Rashid.

Offering an entirely NEW approach to young interior design, energetic hospitality, and seductive customer-centered services, NEW Hotel is the first ever hotel project of award winning designer duo, Fernando and Humberto Campana. YES! Hotels owner Dakis Joannou commissioned the Brazilian brothers for their eco-sensitive ethos and the use of contemporary handicraft practices and local idioms. Drawn to their specific language, which in turn draws from urban street life, contemporary art and the São Paulo favela culture, Joannou gave them absolute freedom to dream. The result is an intriguing 79-room establishment, where every public space and every floor has been creatively re-NEW-ed to include remnants of the former Olympic Palace Hotel. The interiors are simply outstanding, the unusual custom-made furniture and handmade fixtures making guests feel that they live and breathe in a major art installation.

I particularly love that they have incorporated local folklore and traditions and modernized them. The rooms are divided into three categories, the 79 rooms explore three prevalent themes: the Greek shadow theater known as 'Karagiozis', the local obsession with 'vaskania' - the evil eye - and the typical blue and white beads used to protect potential victims from bad luck, and 'Old Athens' nostalgia, illustrated with typical old-school postcards. Pair that with a smattering of furniture sourced from local collectors or workshopped on the spot with the precious assistance of twenty undergrad students from the University of Thessaly - and a whole lot of upcycled wooden furniture scraps - and you’re got yourself some real collaborative magic.

Speaking of Greece...My new found love is Ancient Greek Sandals.

According to an ancient greek myth, the gods and goddesses had their sandals made
on the beautiful island of Crete by a gifted sandal maker who enriched each pair with
magical powers.
Famous for having made the flying sandals for Hermes, the sandal maker also embellished them with his personal signature... a ‘golden wing’ buckle.
Ancient Greek Sandals are handmade locally using traditional techniques that have existed for centuries. The collection is inspired by ancient Greek goddesses & nymphs as well as myths, pottery, jewellery and sculpture. A little piece of ancient Greek magic for beautifully pedicured feet to make you as graceful as a goddess.

Ohhh...can't wait! The wonderful story as told by Yannis Smaragdis (director of El Greco)It is based on the true story of Greek pirate turned businessman Ioannis Varvakis, who made his fortune selling caviar in Russia and all over the world. Varvakis strives all his life for freedom for himself and then for his country, only to find that freedom cannot be won until it is shared. (via IMDb)

Includes my favourite Greek comedian in a more serious role Lakis Lazopoulos, and German actor Sebastian Koch convincingly playing Varvakis.

100% Greek, award winning Athens based studio Mousegraphics have updated their portfolio and well...it continues to be one of my favourite studios. With mainly packaging work, the studio's style is clean and crisp with lovely illustration and photo retouched images. Despite Greece's economic struggle, design and creativity has not taken a back seat, and Greek products are still top quality (enter Korres, Apivita, Mastiha, olive oils, Ouzo, etc). I have posted about Mousegraphics before here. Mousegraphics are also responsible for the redesign of the Olympic Airlines on air magazine, which has a gorgeous layout and makes great use of image and dual language text.
