Want to know what's hot in thrift store shopping right now?
I am going to tell you!

SWEATERS!
Brrrr winter is right around the corner! Right now is the perfect time to create some cozy
accessories for you and your home by taking advantage of the fabulous prices of thrift shop
sweaters. Look in the men's sweater section for cashmere sweaters. These super soft
luxuries work great transformed into pillow covers, accessories, or coordinate a few
and sew them together into a blanket for a friend!

*Remember my friends: Pay no mind to that spot of ink on the cuff or tiny hole near the
label. If the rest of the sweater looks great and is what you are looking for, get it. Don't let
a small flaw hold you back from the perfect sweater if you aren't going to be using that part
of the sweater in your project. Note the flaw to the clerk and they may even give you a discount.
It never hurts to ask, I always do!

Last night I unpacked some goodies that I bought at a huge rummage thrift sale
last May. This was the Boutique At The Rink rummage sale in Bethlehem,
PA, whose proceeds benefited St. Luke's Hospital Cancer Center & Hospice.

This was my first time visiting this huge sale, and when I say huge, I mean huge!
The previous year, the sale raised $150,000, so just imagine all that STUFF!
In any case, take a look at what I scored!

The first thing that caught my attention was a gigantic rusty tin object that was
far across the room on a high shelf in the appliances section. I wasn't sure
what it was, but it was mine!  On closer inspection, it turned out to be an
old punched-tin pendant light fixture. What a fabulous vintage farmhouse find!
It cost $15. I grabbed it. It filled up most of my shopping cart!

I was happy to see there was a crafts section. Here I found box upon box of odds and ends
of craft supplies. There were things like knitting needles, yarn, fabric remnants, leftover project supplies, etc., but what caught my eye was a bag of sequin and bead-filled large glass cigar tubes. Forget the sequins, those glass tubes were going to be turned into something fabulous! I'm not sure what they'll be transformed into yet, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.  What's that you say? The bag of nine test tubes for 50 cents? Sold!

 Next!
Well what to my wondering eyes should appear but a set of nine old embroidery hoops of various sizes all tied together and priced at $1.50. Can you say dreamcatchers? I can't wait to see what happens with those. They will be a great project to do with my daughters this winter, perfect for the first school-closed snow day of the season.

Fabric? Why yes, please.
I'm not an avid sewer, though I have made a few quilts and I know how expensive fabric
can be, so I was sure to take my time and go through this section thoroughly. I found some
great remnants in all types of colors, patterns, and materials. One that immediately
caught my eye was this lightweight canvas vintage horse print drapery material. The piece was 1 & 1/2 yards and only cost a few dollars. Wow.

Along with the horse fabric, I collected a mixed selection of upholstery, quilting, and decorating fabrics.  For some time now,  I've been wanting to craft up a Bohemian style flag similar to the art flags made by Sara Rahbar (see her flags below at the end of this post). These remnants are perfect for that project. They sold them in packs of 4 or 5 remnants for 50 cents a pack. What a great deal!

Here it is all unwrapped on my workbench...

We have had such beautiful weather of late and the cool comfortable weather looks like it will be staying awhile. Perfect for cleaning out the garden & getting some projects finished.
Last year I was able to get free & old privacy fencing to re purpose. Although it is not much of a change in it's use, I am rather happy to now have it as a Picket Fence around my garden. We are just now getting around to finishing up the white paint job. As you can see, we are still working our way towards the back. It's not perfect but it is for my own pleasure and viewing. Just another bonus of living where we have no side or back neighbors.  As for the rabbits, the bottom portion of the fencing inside will get chicken wire stapled all the way around.
This shot was taken first thing in the morning before I straightened the gate & began making the thyme & Rosemary bed which will go along the front , both sides of the gate.
I am laying landscaper cloth over the ground with the plants coming through a small hole which will have black mulch laid on top & a plastic edging border to keep out the grass. It seems to creep in fast so I got creative & decided this would also enhance it's appearance- Note that the ground is uneven all around the garden so my fencing is not straight. I can deal with that by adding the front border of woody herbs.
I reduced my garden in half to now a 20 feet X 34 feet. This next year will be the first of doing intensive planting. I will NOT be defeated again.
After weed whacking the garden down to the ground, I tilled it over & have been sifting out the roots by hand. It has been so pleasurable to work in the garden after such disappointment this year. As I sat in this very spot, the sound of Root Beer crowing, the breeze flowing through  the trees, the sounds of nature echoing around me & my dog laying on a her favorite river rock... was a moment of such peace I wish to enjoy forever. It was in that moment and in so many I have had of late, I knew. I am home. For the first time ever I truly feel I have found Home.
So much left to do such as painting the inside of the garden fence and finishing the grape arbor/pagoda as well as the cement stucco compost Bin & rebuilding a proper stone Bonfire pit for The Captain. That man loves his weekend fires sitting under the same star pattern he looked upon in his childhood, just a few blocks away. I am slowly gathering the materials so it may not be until Spring for that one. The old will have to do for the rest of this season.
Oh! The Thrift store find I spoke of last. Well to understand the thrill you must know the tale. I have searched high & low for so many years trying to collect glass kitchen items that no longer come in glass but are plastic or metal. One of each kind for each of my girls. My daughters, my future daughter in law & for my most cherished Sister in law Marine. I inherited a glass canning funnel from The Captains grandma & cherish it immensely. I really did not think it would be almost 6 years before I would spot one in the thrift store but when I did..I truly GRABBED for it. Carrying it around in my purse before checking out so afraid it would break due to the adrenaline rush I received.
Silly, ay? Yeah. but thats just a part of who I am. It's the little things...
This one will go to my sister in law. This amazing woman who shares so much of the same interests & quirks with me. I joke with my baby brother that he married someone like his sister.  He could not have given me a better gift then to have this woman as my sister. So she gets my $2.50 rare & elusive find. Lucky girl. {I say that in jest but know she will appreciate it}. Just 4 more to go {Thankfully I have about 10 years before needing the next one for the rest of my girls}.
Sweetest dreams,
~Tammie

Happy Friday!

I have had another busy week of events and it’s been hard to fit in any blogging.  Thank you to all you wonderful readers that are patient with me when I’m a little behind on posting and a huge THANK YOU for all of you that take the time to leave such sweet comments!  It motive me to keep going.

Many of you went  thrifting this Saturday on Mr. Goodwill’s national “Thrifting Day”.  I was planning to attend the well organized thrifting event in Columbia, SC, but a local reader, Sharon, turned me on a few thrift stores.  I’m so glad she did because I definitely have a few new “hot spots” to add to my stomping grounds!!

Here are a few new treasures I found……

thrift store weights

Even though I should be using these weights myself ha ha, I picked them up for my teenage son who loves to workout.

I remember as a young girl being dragged to all sorts of flea markets. Usually these trips occurred while on our family vacations.   Now I, myself,  do not drag my kiddos to the thrift store/flea markets with me but I like to find things for them just to show them that there are treasures to be found outside of a mall.

While paying for the weights, I spotted this lovely Tuscan wall art hanging on the wall.  I just knew I had to have it.

Oops!

On my way to the next thrift store I had to stop quickly and the frame slid off the back seat and landed on the weights setting on the floor and tore up both bottom corners of the frame.  Well, the frame was in my possession for all of 2 minutes before I started it’s transformation!

I think I should be able to fix it by trimming  the mat and the glass and cutting new 45 degree corners on the frame.

thrift store bin

I walked around this bin about 5 times.  Touching it, picking it up, and just starring at it before deciding on purchasing it.  The lid is broken off at the hinges and it was a few dollars more than I thought it was really worth.  In the end, I bought it because I think I can create two projects out it.

Here’s what is running through my head:

The base-  I’m thinking it will make a perfect planter for a faux tree by detaching the lid, touching it up with some stain or paint and adding some moss to the top.

The lid-  Two ideas popped in my head.  1.  Flip it over, add some handles to the side, and use it as a tray.  2.  Touch up the outside with stain or paint and mount a small artifact or frame.   It will be great for adding texture and depth to an otherwise plain or too small object.

What would you do with it?

Carafe

I finally purchased three Carafe that I have been wanting for a long time.  I actually spotted three back in the winter.  For months I went  into the thrift store and just longed for them setting there among other glassware but never brought myself to buy them.  They weren’t expensive, I just wondered if I would really use them and where I would store them.  After months and months of seeing them, I finally decided to purchase them….. well don’t you know they were gone!  Yes, “a day late and dollar short” should be my motto.

When I found three of them setting at another thrift store, I didn’t hesitate.  Even paid a $1.50 more!  I learn new lessons everyday.

You really need to pick up some for yourself (if you haven’t already)!  I have been having so much fun with these Carafes on our weekend brunches!  Who knows….. maybe I will start entertaining more!?!?!

I picked up these thingamabobs at the thrift store a few months back for my son’s bookshelf.  At first, I spray painted them white.  They are made of plaster and the paint I used made them look chalky.  What I wanted them to look like was high gloss lacquer.  So I set them aside until I figured out my next move.

While on vacation in NY, I spotted this silver glazed fish in one of the quant little shops on the St. Lawrence.  It was shiny, it was silver, and it had depth.  Perfect.  I didn’t take a photo of the fish, and in fact, it didn’t hit me like a ton of bricks when I saw it.  I actually got thinking about it several days later on our way back home.  A 12 hour car ride gives you plenty of time to think about the most random things.

Silver Painted Bookends

What are these things?

Sometimes I think they look like shells.

Silver with black glaze paint treatment

Other times they look like an ear.

Whatever they are my son doesn’t seem to mind them because if he had I would have seen them thrown back into my craft room.

Here’s a photo (below) what they looked like before.

Here’s another thrift store find.  A gold tacky wall sconce.

This photo doesn’t even show how gold and tacky it was in person!

I spayed the entire sconce white and then glazed with brown and gray.

Glazed Sconce

When you go thrifting, do you ever stop and wonder what others must be thinking to themselves as you walk away with that strange thingamabob?  I know I do.  When I see someone pick up something that I would never be caught dead bring home I drive myself crazy thinking they have this great vision for something awesome and I didn’t see it!

  • How will they use it?
  • Will they paint it some unexpected POP of color?
  • Will they tear it apart and make something even better?
  • God forbid, will they leave it like it is? {okay, that was a joke}
