Caddis fly larvae build protective cases using materials found in their environment. French artist Hubert Duprat supplied them with gold leaf and precious stones including opal and turquoise. This is what they created. They are beautifully gross or disgustingly beautiful depending on how you see it. Interesting to see the patterns and combinations created by nature.

The images above illustrate the results of an unusual artistic collaboration between the French artist Hubert Duprat and a group of caddis fly larvae. A small winged insect belonging to the order Trichoptera and closely related to the butterfly, caddis flies live near streams and ponds and produce aquatic larvae that protect their developing bodies by manufacturing sheaths, or cases, spun from silk and incorporating substances—grains of sand, particles of mineral or plant material, bits of fish bone or crustacean shell—readily available in their benthic ecosystem. The larvae are remarkably adaptable: if other suitable materials are introduced into their environment, they will often incorporate those as well.
Duprat, who was born in 1957, began working with caddis fly larvae in the early 1980s. An avid naturalist since childhood, he was aware of the caddis fly in its role as a favored bait for trout fishermen, but his idea for the project depicted here began, he has said, after observing prospectors panning for gold in the Ariège river in southwestern France. After collecting the larvae from their normal environments, he relocates them to his studio where he gently removes their own natural cases and then places them in aquaria that he fills with alternative materials from which they can begin to recreate their protective sheaths. He began with only gold spangles but has since also added the kinds of semi-precious and precious stones (including turquoise, opals, lapis lazuli and coral, as well as pearls, rubies, sapphires, and diamonds) seen here. The insects do not always incorporate all the available materials into their case designs, and certain larvae, Duprat notes, seem to have better facility with some materials than with others. Additionally, cases built by one insect and then discarded when it evolves into its fly state are sometimes recovered by other larvae, who may repurpose it by adding to or altering its size and form.

Here are some patterns of Lisbon from my recent trip to the city. It's a city filled with beautiful graffiti  tiled and brightly coloured buildings, seven hills and paved patterns. I hope these will inspire you to visit the beautiful city. The Portuguese themselves are very laid back and easy going, despite not knowing any Portuguese myself, I still found is very easy to always find a kind passer-by to help with directions and advice about where to visit. We stayed in the bustling Bairro Alto area, which is full of small drinking holes and walking distance (if you like to walk) from everything worth seeing. For the rest, you can easily hail a taxi, which are relatively cheap. When our taxi driver got lost once taking us to the wrong address, he zeroed the amount and took us to the right place without charging us extra. Not sure how may honest taxi drivers you can find in other European cities ?! We even left some of own graffiti in Lisbon (Dino Kouyiallis).

As always I browse Pinterest for ideas and inspiration. Here are a few of the images I have pinned onto my Interior Inspiration board this week. I love the deep colours combined with natural wood in some of the rooms. I also included images of some artworks that made me smile. And of course I couldn't resist including some colourful cushions... In these cold winter months I believe we need to surround ourselves with happy colours and the things we love. Stay warm! Enjoy!

Last week I showed you this pile of wood.  And asked you what you "wood" do with it...

I also promised to show you what I did with it.

So here's what I did...

I used the wood to create this beautiful piece of art for the Loft Bedroom.  And when I say I created the art, what I really mean is that it was a collaborative effort between my Papa, the Hubby and me.  I came up with the initial

A Cinemagraph is an image that contains within itself a living moment that allows a glimpse of time to be experienced and preserved endlessly. A moving photographs in plain words to you and me. Graphic designer Kevin Burg  and photographer Jamie Beck take a traditional photographs and combine a living moment into the image through the isolated animation of multiple frames (GIFs). Beck and Burg named the process "Cinemagraphs" for their cinematic quality while maintaining at its soul the principles of traditional photography. Here's a few of their fashion editorial cinemagraphs, you can view more on their site. Would be interesting to see these make their way into e-magazines and e-books, but also in an exhibition space (?!). With smartphones and tablets, we've become so used to motion and technology, could this be the future of photography?
In a behind-the-scenes documentary setting, these images below give you a glimpse of the New York Fashion Week hustle, and also making-of photos at Dogfish Head brewery. These moving GIF files really act as small stories as opposed to just one captured still and add a new dimension to a company profile on a website or accompanying an article on a site.
